Microscope continues its YES program of emerging artists with new and recent moving image works by Christy Shigekawa and by Mike Newton.

Shigekawa’s short films and videos begin with images recorded in life which she then manipulates until what is observed and what is imagined become indistinguishable. Newton incorporates video, 35mm photographic slides and prose poetry into his projected works to find beauty and peril at the intersections of potentially incompatible systems, such as using right-wing conspiracy theories to discuss the body. The Bushwick-based artists and long-time friends see their works as overlapping in the themes of “polysemy and uncertainty” reflecting on the “strangeness, the unknowability” manifest in their visual world(s).

Christy Shigekawa was born in Los Angeles and earned an MFA in Photography from Cranbrook Academy of Art. She is currently working on a documentary about her family’s restaurant in Chinatown, Los Angeles which, during the late 70’s through early 80’s, also happened to be the home of seminal punk club, Hong Kong Cafe. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Mike Newton is a Brooklyn-based artist and writer. He is an editor of Secret Behavior — a magazine about art and the human condition — and contributes regularly to The Indypendent (a progressive print newspaper based in NYC); his writing has also appeared in The Brooklyn Rail, Truthout, Harp and Altar, and Coagula, among others. Newton has had solo exhibits at Fort Gondo (St. Louis) and MoNA (Museum of New Art, Detroit). He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
