Alice Guareschi: circular distances intersecting
five early video works
admission $6 – artist in person

Italian artist Alice Guareschi visiting from Milan joins us at Microscope Gallery to present a program of her early short video work. The five personal works in “circular distances intersecting” together involve situations of travel and invoke thoughts about distance and the space and time in between. More literal interpretations include a boat and motor cycle ride in Cambodia and a plane flight over the alps. Other works contemplate dream travel and follow the artist Richard Nonas imagining the future installation of an exhibition of his work.

Guareschi is an artist working primarily with multiple medium and living in Milan.

PROGRAM:

untitled (fall), 2005
miniDV, colour, 14 min
The shooting of a take off over the alps, interrupted by black and white television interferences from abroad, reveals the sudden ovelapping of a here and a there during the flight, and becomes cause for reflection about the emotional dynamics of leaving and being back in a place.

racconto d’inverno #2. sleepwalking / winter’s tale #2. sleepwalking , 2004
video8, colour, 8 min
A plain covered in fog, thoughts like birds flying towards a city at dawn, where a girl is dreaming. “You’re certainly sleeping”. A circular structure, which a music piece by Electrelane breaks into, turning into red the tranquility of sleep.

winter’s tale #3. on the possibility of the look in proportion to the speed of movement, 2005
video8, colour, 14 min
Cambodia, January 2005. A boat trip down the Sangker river as far as the Tonle’ Seap lake, and in parallel, a motorbike journey from Phnom Penh to the island that lies at the intersection of the two rivers that cross the city, passing over the Japanese bridge, to the ends of the earth.

local time at destination (tower), 2005
video8, colour, 9 min
On a winter’s night, a fixed shot of the Eiffel tower appearing and disappearing in the fog, until a music breaks the silence and summons up another moment, another story.

behind words. artist richard nonas measuring the space of an idea, 2003
video8, colour, 21min
In July 2003, the American artist Richard Nonas is invited to create a site-specific installation in the hall of the Fondazione Ratti in Como. The video shows one of those very private, secret moments that are involved in the creation of a work of art, when the space is still empty, but for the artist who crosses it, it is already a dense universe marked by infinite paths.

total running time 66 minutes
