In-Camera: Ex Speculis
by Katherine Bauer
New Super 8mm and 16mm films, works-in progress, and New York debuts
artist in person – admission $6

Stills from: How We Study The Sun (2012) and Excavated #1 (2013)

On the final day of her current exhibition “Teenage Dream Sequence: Seduction of the Eye”, we welcome Katherine Bauer for a program of her Super 8 and 16mm films. For the evening Bauer, who previously screened at the gallery in 2012, will present a broad program of new works, New York debuts, works-in-progress and film notes. As the title suggests – with speculis referring to the raised look-out posts used by the Romans for surveying the landscape – the selections tend toward the spontaneous or the less controlled and self-conscious. In-camera editing, hand-processing, and the use of negative and reversal film stocks were involved.
Multiple projector works should be expected.

PROGRAM includes:

The Steam System, 2012, 16mm, 3 minutes, color reversal
Dizzying swirls of steam take you into a system of energy and light around the Con Edison Steam power plant on 13th Street in New York City.

How We Study The Sun, 2012, 16mm, 3 minutes, color reversal
T.V. fuzz to the crystal buzz of the New York City street lights at night.

LuxDelux, 2013, 16mm, 3 minutes, black and white reversal film
Explores the patterns of excessive angular light and the decay of emulsion as the stones of Paris are licked by La Seine.

Bon Bon, 2013, 16mm, black and white negative, 3 minutes
Shot and edited all in camera, and projected in negative the single 100 ft spool is a visual play on the textures of French pastries coupled with architectural and sculptural patterns found in the city’s fin-de-siècle styling.

Selections from
Le Chant Diabolique de Mademoiselle Detritavoria Grex, 16mm, color negative and reversal, hand-processed, 2013, multiple projector version, 10min
The film plays with the modes of science fiction movies by filtering them through the decadent imagery suggested by the Ville Lumière and the dark energy conveyed through the universe of Huysmans. This narrative work-in-progress, shot in Paris, emphasizes the medium itself through the in-camera work, the filmic contingency of rushes, notes in the context of the other shorts.

Excavated #1, 2013, 9 minutes, Super 8mm, color reversal
This film is part of a larger series of films mostly based on travels in various parts of the world. This one brings together three different locations: a landing in Los Angeles, a demolition derby in Upstate New York, and an exploration of the Paris gutters. The Excavated series can not be taken as a fully finished body of work but rather as notes and journal entries on possible sets for films to come. All the films from the series were shot in Super 8mm, due to the lightness and the simplicity of the camera.

_O_O_O_O_ , 2014, 16mm black and white reversal, 6 minutes
Nuclear cleavage, unknowable geographies as numerous as the granules of sand, gesturing toward the infinite loop.
