Microscope Gallery is pleased to present the New York incarnation of “Caravan: Double Feature” expanded cinema and performance event by Evan Dawson and Paige Phillips in our entrance garage. Held just after sundown, a 16mm film of two wanderers is projected via the van’s headlights by transforming part of an existing building into a canvas. The film loops around the side profile of the vehicle and the headlights have been replaced by projectors. Performance intervals by the two collaborating artists change the dynamic of the surrounding social space. The energy needed for the event is generated from the car’s battery, while two bricks on the gas pedal keep the battery charged. By the end of this trip Caravan will have held public events in Columbus, OH, Matewan, WV, Philadelphia, PA, Washington D.C., and New York, NY.

PAIGE PHILLIPS is a movement based artist who collaborates with Evan Dawson. She has worked as a dancer, performance artist and choreographer in locations such as Seattle, New York City, Columbus, and France. Her artwork is situated on the border between the performing and visual arts, and is primarily concerned with physical and mental endurance challenges and recontextualizations of rituals. Phillips has been produced by venues including On the Boards, Velocity Dance Center, Urban Arts Space, Columbus College of Art and Design, The Sculpture Center, and Columbus Moving Company. She was a member of the Khambatta Dance Company for three seasons, and has performed for artists such as Josiah McElheny, Doosung Yoo and Owen David. She holds a MFA from The Ohio State University with an interdisciplinary specialization in Folklore Studies, a BFA from Cornish College of the Arts, and a degree from Interlochen Arts Academy. She is a recipient of the 2014 Ohio Arts Council’s Individual Excellence Award and has received additional grants from GCAC and The Ohio State University. This fall she is headed to Nepal with Dawson for an artist residency.
EVAN DAWSON is the grandson of immigrant Holocaust survivors and the child of missionaries working in Southeast Asia. Drawing on these cross-cultural experiences and the dispersion of his family, Dawson’s wide-ranging practice, which involves sculpture as well as performance and two-dimensional work, investigates the transformation and movement of things. Often employing found materials, his works stand in a relationship to abundance and need, as well as to the various mechanisms of cultural memory and dissemination that form the story of an object’s creation. Each work begins with the material circumstances of daily life—immediate, disparate and messy as they are—and moves toward a singular, poetic gesture. Dawson earned an MFA in sculpture from The Ohio State University in 2012, and has since been a Lecturer in the Department of Art there. His work has been shown widely within Columbus, most recently at the Columbus Museum of Art, as well as at the Sculpture Center in Cleveland, Semantics Gallery in Cincinnati, and at NYCAMS in New York City. He received a 2013 Visual Artist Fellowship Grant through the Greater Columbus Arts Council, which has partially funded Caravan: Double Feature.
