Microscope is pleased to present “Instrumental Noise”, improvised electro-acoustic solo sets by Nate Wooley, Tamio Shiraishi, and Leila Bordreuil, who also organized the night.
Nate Wooley will perform acoustic improvisation on trumpet as well as with the guitar amplifier sculpting feedback in ways alien to the language and history of jazz trumpet. Tamio Shiraishi will be moving throughout the gallery in a set combining computer software and alto-saxophone to explore possibilities of sound distortion through space in a set combining computer. Leila Bordreuil uses a variety of microphones and carefully positioned amplifiers to create a wide range of textures for her performance on amplified and prepared cello.

Nate Wooley was born in 1974 in Clatskanie, Oregon (pop. 2,000) in the timber country of the Pacific Northwestern. He began playing trumpet professionally with his father, a big band saxophonist, at the age of 13. His time in Oregon, a place of relative quiet and slow time reference, instilled in Nate a musical aesthetic that has informed all of his music making for the past 20 years. Nate moved to New York in 2001 and now performs regularly with John Zorn, Anthony Braxton, Eliane Radigue, Ken Vandermark, Fred Frith, Evan Parker, and Yoshi Wada as well as with artists including Chris Corsano, C. Spencer Yeh, Peter Evans, and Mary Halvorson.
Tamio Shiraishi is a Japanese saxophone player, currently living in New York. Shiraishi is a legend of the Japanese underground, and took part in the first generation of Keiji Haino’s Fushitususha. For over 30 years he has pursued a unique style of performance ranging from guttural vocal explosions to his famously shrieking saxophone spasms. Site-specific field recordings, particularly in urban spaces, have been a long-term interest in Shiraishi’s work, and while he lived in Tokyo, he could often be seen playing with the wind on a pedestrian bridge in late-night Shinjuku. He currently performs in New York subway stations after midnight.
Leila Bordreuil is a Brooklyn based cellist, composer and sound artist from France. Her cello playing is often improvised, and mainly focuses on texture variations and a collage of phantom overtones and pitched utterances. Through an original vocabulary of extended techniques, preparations, and imaginative amplification methods, her instrument is used as an abstract resonant body to challenge conventional cello practice. Her composed works draw from a similar texture-based musical aesthetic, but also focus on the relationship between sound and space. In her site-specific electro-acoustic compositions, architecture is the foundation of the piece and musicality arises from an organized spacialization of sound. She has collaborated with Lea Bertucci, Michael Foster, Eli Keszler and Marina Rosenfeld among others.
