We are happy to welcome to the gallery artists Shinya Sugimoto and Jeremy Young to present an evening of improvisation for piano, tapes and electronics. In his work, Sugimoto merges samples and improvised piano phrases into a polyphonic structure of obscure audio layers, while Young’s practice focuses on reel-to-reel tape collage, sound-poetry and audio-visual scoring. The two, who have performed extensively in US and abroad but always separately, will be improvising here together for the first time.
The performance will be accompanied by live 16mm film and slide projection by Joel Schlemowitz. A sound set by Jeremy D. Slater opens the night.

Shinya Sugimoto (1979) is a New York/Osaka-based Japanese composer and recording engineer. Although largely based on contemporary classical music, his style crosses over immensely broad fields. Sugimoto also has been featured worldwide in concerts, art exhibitions, films, and numerous recording projects both as a solo artist and a collaborator. In recent years, he has presented solo performances at Issue Project Room (Brooklyn, NY) on several occasions, and has been gaining international recognition as a film score composer with collaborators including Thai filmmaker Anocha Suwichakornpong.
Jeremy Young has performed and released material throughout Europe, Asia, the US, UK and Canada. In 2014, he was awarded a Media Artists’ Assistance Grant by Wave Farm (NYSCA) to create 125 unique artist edition double-sided loop pieces towards developing sustainable audience engagement with the sonic arts, housing all 250 total loops online in a freely streamable living archive. His main sonic project is a collaborative trio with Ian Temple and Jesse Perlstein called Sontag Shogun that makes use of analog sound treatments and nostalgic solo piano compositions in harmony to depict abstract places in our memory. He has shared the stage with notable artists such as Hauschka, Julia Kent, Aki Onda, Matana Roberts, Jason Lescalleet, Dead Rat Orchestra, Barn Owl, Sam Shalabi, Alexander Turnquist, Tom Carter, Noveller, Ben Vida & Koen Holtkamp among many others. Young released his debut duo album with cellist/multi-instrumentalist Aaron Martin entitled, A Pulse Passes from Hand to Hand in 2015 on Chihei Hatakeyama’s label White Paddy Mountain.
Joel Schlemowitz is an experimental filmmaker and artist based in Brooklyn who works primarily with 16mm film, shadowplay, and stereographic media. He has recently completed his first feature film 78rpm, an experimental documentary about the gramophone. His short works have been shown at the Ann Arbor Film Festival, New York Film Festival, and Tribeca Film Festival and have received awards from the Chicago Underground Film Festival, The Dallas Video Festival, and elsewhere. His works have exhibited at Courthouse Gallery, Anthology Film Archives and Microscope Gallery, among others.
Jeremy D. Slater is a multi-disciplinary artist working in the areas of sound, video, computer art, performance, and installation. Born in Reading, England and a graduate of both SUNY College at Buffalo and School of Visual Arts with an MFA in Computer Art. Slater performs as ( ) and is a member of ROTC (Rubaiyats of the Cicadas), Frogwell, tu, EMP, and Plan 23. Slater was guest musician at Watermill Center and HERE with Cave/Leimay, and was artist in residence at Seoul Art Space_Geumcheon in Seoul, South Korea. He has received a fellowship from New York Foundation of the Art (NYFA) and also attended the Experimental Television Residency.
