We are pleased to present, as part of our Sound Series, a night of unconventional improvisation blurring the line between music and sound art executed on a variety of instruments including brass, strings and percussions in trio and solo formations.
Earth Tongues (Carlo Costa/Dan Peck/Joe Moffett) is a trio that creates immersive sound environments which weave through drones, multi layered textures, spacious minimalism and quiet. The trio performs both concerts and site-specific extended soundscapes.
Sean Ali (double bass), Leila Bordreuil (cello) and Joanna Mattrey (viola) is an acoustic trio exploring the sonic possibilities that arise from the unusual assemblage of lower register instruments through uncommon playing techniques and preparations, intercut with fleeting references to mid-century avant-garde.
Michael Foster is a saxophonist and multi instrumentalist who works with a variety of prepared horns, objects, amplifiers and cassette tapes. His energetic and often extremely physical performances are at the threshold of music and performance art.

Dan Peck is an experimental musician/tubist currently living in New York City. He is active as a sideman working regularly with projects led by Peter Evans, Tony Malaby, Anthony Braxton, Ingrid Laubrok, and Nate Wooley. He also performs contemporary music as a member of ICE (International Contemporary Ensemble) and leads the doom jazz trio The Gate (w/ bassist Tom Blancarte and drummer Brian Osborne) as well as a solo tuba project. In 2012 Dan founded the record label Tubapede on which he released his debut solo recording Solo LP.
New York-based trumpeter, improviser, and composer Joe Moffett approaches his work with a keen interest in unconventional sounds and forms, collective composition, and the intersection of words and music. He is a regular participant in the improvised music scene in Brooklyn and is co-founder of a number of ensembles such as the Kaplan/Merega/Moffett Trio, which released its debut, Crows and Motives, in 2014 on Underwolf Records; and Trismegistus, with bassist Sean Ali, trombonist Ben Gerstein, percussionist Devin Gray. Moffett’s explorations into text and music are evident in his work with the experimental art song duo Twins of El Dorado, with vocalist Kristin Slipp. The ensemble’s debut, Portend the End, was officially released on Prom Night Records in 2013.
Percussionist and composer Carlo Costa, was born and grew up in Rome, Italy. Since 2005 he has been living in New York City where he works primarily in fields of experimental and improvised music. He currently leads or co-leads Minerva (w/ bassist Pascal Niggenkemper and pianist JP Schlegelmilch), Natura Morta (w/ bassist Sean Ali and violist Frantz Loriot), the Carlo Costa Quartet (w/ saxophonist Jonathan Moritz, trombonist Steve Swell and bassist Sean Ali), a duo with guitarist Ryan Ferreira, the large ensemble Acustica and a solo percussion project. In 2014 he founded Neither/Nor Records a label dedicated to experimental and improvised music.
Bassist, composer, and improviser Sean Ali from Dayton, Ohio has been living in New York City since 2003, where he participates in the city’s vibrant experimental music scene both as a performer and curator. His current projects include: Fester, Hag, Lathan/Flin/Ali, Mattrey/Bordreuil/Ali, Natura Morta, and PascAli. His solo performances center around text and sound-specific preparations for the bass. He is the founder and leader of a large ensemble of low-tone instruments called The Mudbath Orchestra. He is co-founder and member of the new music label Prom Night Records. He is co-founder and former curator at 65Fen Music Series.
Leila Bordreuil is a cellist, composer, and sound artist from Aix en Provence, France. Through an original vocabulary of extended techniques, preparations, and imaginative amplification methods, her instrument is used as an abstract resonant body to challenge conventional cello practice. Her composed works draw from a similar texture-based musical aesthetic, but also focus on the relationship between sound and space. In her site-specific electro-acoustic compositions, architecture is the foundation of the piece and musicality arises from an organized spacialization of sound.
Joanna Mattrey is a violist and teacher who finds fulfillment through collaboration with modern composers and improvisers in creative settings. She is the founder of WhoThroughThen, a collective that commissions and presents premieres and structured improvisations for unusual ensembles. An avid chamber musician, Joanna has collaborated with members of the Sirius Quartet, PUBLIQuartet, John Escreet, Nasheet Waits, Jonah Rosenberg, and Christopher Hoffman. She has played at such venues as The Jazz Gallery, The Guggenheim Museum, Shapeshifter Lab, Carnegie Hall, and the Dominican Republic’s Teatro Nacional.
Michael Foster is a Brooklyn based saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist working within the fields of free improvisation, composition (both graphic and notated), free jazz, noise, punk, and industrial music. After studying Experimental & Electronic Arts at Bard College Michael moved to Brooklyn in 2012. Selected notable venues he’s performed at include Bowling Green State University (Ohio), The Stone (NYC), BimHuis (NL), Jazzfestival Groningen (NL), Fabrica Braço de Prata (PT), Webster Hall (NYC), XI20 (LT), Jazzclub Erfurt (DE), and many more. Current ensembles include: Foster-Michael Evans-Pascal Niggenkemper Trio, Andrew Barker Trio, While We Still Have Bodies, and BDM, GALM Quartet, Duos with Leila Bordreuil, Ben Bennett, and Ted Byrnes.
