Microscope’s current exhibition of live expanded cinema performance “Never Twice” continues this week with works by Joel Schlemowitz and Bradley Eros. For the occasion, both artists have conceived of new performances which they will be completing and installing on site during the gallery hours leading up to Sunday’s performances (1-6pm on Thurs 12/31, Sat 1/2, & Sun 1/3).
Schlemowitz’s “An alchemic amalgam: analog images and electronic music” features live image and sound in a performance of projections by the artist with hand-made 35mm slides, hand-processed 16mm film, and overhead projector. The piece will be accompanied by music by Mario-Enrique Paoli using synthesizers, laptop, electric guitar, digital signal processing and turntable. Schlemowitz describes the work as an alchemical amalgamation of elements in which colors of projection and musical tones combine: “Darkness becomes noise. Silence becomes light …The guitar strings’ tension in sympathetic resonation with the motion picture film’s rapid fire intonations at 18 frames per second.”
Eros’ “Screens <>” is a series of short projection pieces using lights and projectors with screens made of colored gels, refraction grating, colored plastics, mirrors, glass, cloth, paper, metal, mesh, etc. Some works will include film loops of color flicker and hand-painted surfaces. Others are what Eros calls “musique plastiques”, or live contracted film performances of colored gels and celluloid film, burning in the gate, with the material elements along with the sounds emanating from the machines in use miked and amplified.
Eros’ works will also exist as installation during the exhibit to be looked at from both sides, and in this form can be seen as having a relationship to Duchamp’s “To Be Looked at (from the Other Side of the Glass) with One Eye, Close to, for Almost an Hour”, as well as his “The Large Glass”.
Artists will be present during Gallery Hours this week (1 to 6pm on Thursday December 31 & January 2-4) for set-up, rehearsals, take down and other activities.
Bradley Eros is an artist working in myriad mediums including film and video, collage, performance, contracted and expanded cinema & installation. Eros’ works have exhibited and screened extensively in the US and abroad including at Microscope Gallery, The Whitney Biennial, The Whitney Museum’s series “The American Century”, The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), The Andy Warhol Museum, MoMA PS1, Camden Arts Center (London), Anthology Film Archives, Arsenal (Berlin), Participant Inc., The Kitchen, Performa09, Exit Art, White Box, and The New York, London and Rotterdam Film Festivals. Collaborations include the Alchemical Theater, the band Circle X, Voom HD Lab, and the expanded cinema groups kinoSonik, Arcane Project and currently Optipus.
Joel Schlemowitz is an artist working with multiple mediums including celluloid film, installation and collage. His works have previously exhibited at Microscope Gallery as well as at the Courthouse Gallery at Anthology Film Archives, KUMUKUMU Gallery, Museum of Contemporary Cinema (Madrid), Ukrainian Institute of America, The Images Festival (Canada), and Bound & Unbound Gallery among others. His films are widely screened at cinemas, festivals, and institutions including at The Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum, Harvard Film Archive, Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), the New York Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival, New York Underground Film Festival, The London Film Festival among many others. He has received grants from the Jerome Foundation and New York State Council on the Arts.
Mario-Enrique Paoli is an electric guitarist, electronic music arranger/composer, sound designer, video/audio editor, producer and director. He has been studying the guitar and music theory from a very early age. He has also directed and produced theater, traditional and experimental including with Mobius Theater (later named Mobius Performing Group and now known as Mobius Artist Group) where for many years he collaborated and co-produced dozens of works with the company and with national and international performance artists. He currently works and resides in New York.
