Microscope Gallery is very pleased to present 3D animation works by Cristobal Cea and Theodore Darst as part of our YES emerging artists series. Although with different approaches and tone, both New York-based artists employ a DIY or lo-fi aesthetic in works that combine computer generated elements with original video footage along with appropriated imagery from news or internet sources often to address or reference social and cultural concerns.
Among the works by Cristobal Cea, all made over the past year, are those from ongoing projects “Ghosts of Concordia” and “A Mother Grieves for Her Son”, in which the artist attempts to expand and intensify the duration of our attention to particular events – the floods of Concordia or a protest in Venezuela – that are larger than the now mostly forgotten, short news clips that traveled the globe at the times of those incidents. Among the other works a new series “In Syria” will make its debut.
Theodore Darst’s new and recent works – including a premiere – range from a music video goodbye to Chicago to animated sculptures set in rural Ohio to works featuring the artist’s own avatar “The Tourist”, a 3D model he purchased online. A more formal work with iPhone footage and referencing Paul Sharits’ “Shutter Interface” is also incorporated into the mix.
Both Cea and Darst will be in attendance and available for a Q&A after the screening.

Cristobal Cea is an artist born in Santiago, Chile and currently based in Brooklyn, NY. His work has been shown internationally in solo and group exhibitions at BRIC Arts Media, Brooklyn, NY; John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Wisconsin, MI; 789 Art District, Beijing, China; Galería Concreta, Santiago, Chile; Cave Space, Detroit, MI, and the RISD Digital + Media Biennial 2012, Providence, RI, among others. Cea has been awarded the Fulbright Scholarship (U.S.A.), the RISD Bridge Research Grant, the National Council for the Arts Grant (Chile), the RISD President Scholarship (U.S.A), the Vermont Studio Center Fellowship, and the first prize of the Matilde Perez’s “Art and Digital Technologies” Competition. He is also a recipient of the MacDowell Colony Fellowship and his drawing series “Big Data” is part of the Deutsche Bank drawing collection. Cristobal Cea holds a BA from the Pontificia Universidad Católica Chile and an MFA in Digital Media from the Rhode Island School of Design, where he taught at the Film Animation and Film department.
Theodore Darst (b. 1986) lives and works in New York City. His work has recently appeared in solo shows at ParisLondonHongKong, Chicago and UNPAINTED, Munich. His work has been included in exhibitions and screenings including, 67, New York, Roots & Culture, Chicago, Chicago Underground Film Festival, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. He completed his MFA at Bard in 2015. Upcoming shows include a screening at ICA London this spring.
