Microscope is pleased to announce “Lunation 9: Nightshades of the Thunder Moon”, a live performance by Katherine Bauer at the gallery related to and in connection with her current solo exhibition “Of The Quarry Land“.
In “Lunation 9” – named after the ninth day past the New Thunder Moon on which the event takes place – Bauer is joined by other female performers to officiate a ritual that involves the dismantling of a 16mm film projector, the mechanical parts of which are bathed into cement, cow’s blood, and milk, and then placed onto a crystallized deer hide adorned with moon flower seed pods, vines and Mugwort. Live electric guitar and sibylline ocean sounds accompany the ceremony.
The gallery is open late from 6 to 9pm in conjunction with “Bushwick Hot Summer Nights”, during which time the audience will be able to visit Bauer’s exhibition.
“Reels project the solar system and dismember it. Moon, seed, breast, lens, embody the circle. Moving backwards from the projector. The possibilities of sight are dismantled, bound and unbound by the structures emerging after the Flood. Cement, blood, steel, and milk will merge with the dreaming plants of Mugwort and Datura Moon Flowers from the Garden. Calls resonate from the prehistoric ocean. The frequencies are the waters of a cleansing bath as each gear is concatenated and reformed. Emerging from the blood and milk of industry this oracle will set a new biorhythm into the seven directions.” – Katherine Bauer

Katherine Bauer works primarily with 16mm film and its material potential for sculpture, photography and installation. Much of her work involves mythologies, folklores, and narratives. In addition to Microscope Gallery, her work has previously exhibited at Participant Inc., NY; Shoot the Lobster, Dusseldorf, Germany; and Immanence Gallery, Paris, France among others. Bauer was awarded a 2012-13 Cité Internationale des Arts Paris Residency and was a recipient of a Carla Bruni-Sarkozy Foundation Fellowship (2012-13). Her work has been reviewed in Artforum, Artspace, and The Village Voice, among others. Bauer holds a BA in film and electronic arts from Bard College and a MFA from NYU Steinhardt (2013). She was born in Houston, Texas and currently lives and works in Hudson, New York.
