Microscope is pleased to present a screening of works in film and video by LJ Frezza and Joshua Gen Solondz as part of our YES series of emerging artists. The program, which includes a selection of works made over the past several years as well as new works in progress, features side-by-side two artists who use painstaking editing processes to create new imagery and content in distinct bodies of work.

Frezza, whose latest videos  “I Want To” (2016, work in progress) and “The Neutral” (2016) along with his 2014 “Nothing” dissect TV shows (X-Files, Start Trek, Seinfeld respectively) — sometimes using footage from the entire series — to reveal the hidden in plain sight as clues into the collective perception of future, surveillance, or other issues at a certain moment in time. Among the other source materials are the entire James Bond series and the video game “The Elder Scrolls”.

Solondz’s works are generally oriented towards the breakdown of the system — camera, capture, recording and other devices as well as the medium itself. “Nightmare Arson Fire” (2016) for instance combines multiple attempts at contact printing a badly decayed roll of film retrieved from a Brooklyn basement after a fire. In “lapse” (2014) Solondz employs single-frame shooting using an unreliable Bolex camera. And for “it’s not a prison if you never try the door” (2013) Godzilla’s destruction of urban buildings is accompanied by glitches and other distortions of the digital image.

Frezza and Solondz will be in attendance for a Q&A following the screening.
