Microscope is very pleased to present a new live expanded cinema and sound performance \u201cReliquary\u201d by Joel Schlemowitz, whose current exhibit PARALLAX REVERIES<\/span><\/a><\/em><\/strong> is on view at the gallery. In \u201cReliquary\u201d Schlemowitz projects and layers imagery from 16mm footage, 35 mm slides and colored gels, incorporating sounds from vintage 78 Victrola records \u2013 selected during the course of the performance – and the fragrance of burning incense into a unique, live poetic and immersive sensory experience.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Schlemowitz describes \u201cReliquary\u201d as a peon to beauty centering around repurposed 16mm footage from an earlier film portrait of Aesthesia, a group of artists living in Burlington Vermont and inspired by the Victorian lifestyle and pleasures.<\/span>

\nJOEL SCHLEMOWITZ is Brooklyn artist working with multiple mediums including celluloid film, installation and collage. His works have also exhibited at\u00a0Courthouse Gallery at Anthology Film Archives, KUMUKUMU Gallery, Museum of Contemporary Cinema (Madrid),\u00a0Ukrainian Institute of America, The Images Festival (Canada), Bound & Unbound Gallery. His films are widely screened at cinemas, festivals, and institutions including at The Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum, Harvard Film Archives, Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), the New York Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival, New York Underground Film Festival, The London Film Festival among many others.
