Jonas Mekas’ screening premiere of his\u00a0\u201c365 Day Project\u201d continues this holiday weekend with \u201cPart 11: November\u201d. A sense of approaching completion is in the air for this eleventh part as Mekas travels with friends and family from upstate New York, to Paris, and to his native Lithuania for the opening of a film and art center bearing his name in Vilnius. There Ben Vautier presents a series of Fluxus performances;\u00a0Vytautas Landsbergis, the first head of state\u00a0following LIthuanian’s withdrawal from the Soviet Union, plays\u00a0\u00e9tudes by \u010ciurlionis;\u00a0Edward Zwick, who happens to be filming “Defiance” there,\u00a0creates fake snow for the shoot; and Mekas after more than six decades has his Lithuanian passport restored. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The month also features rare footage of John Lennon, Yoko Ono and Fred Astaire and an excerpt from Adolfas Mekas’ Thanksgiving scene in his film “Hallelujah the Hills”. Also appearing: Salman Rushdie, Frank Gehry, Belgian filmmaker Boris Lehman and the Anthology Film Archives workers who take the Staten Island ferry to bury their beloved co-worker Maxi the cat.\u00a0\u2028\u00a0\u2028<\/span>

About 365 Day Project:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2028\u201cEvery day of the year 2007 I placed on my website one new video usually about three to ten minutes in length. \u00a0By the time the project ended, I had made 38 hours of completed video works, the equivalent of twenty feature films\u2026 It was the most challenging undertaking I had ever done. The videos deal with my life in Brooklyn and my many travels of that year. It\u2019s personal and anthropological (impersonal) at the same time. \u00a0During my travels I relied a lot on technical and other help from The Gang (Benn Northover, Sebastian Mekas \u2014 I travel most of the time with The Gang) and Elle Burchill was always ready at my Brooklyn station. You\u2019ll see a lot of me and my friends, various daily activities, gettings together, a lot of music, and a lot of events around New York and Europe that year. The main challenge was to record it and share it immediately with many friends all over the world. The videos in the \u201c365 Day Project\u201d were made available for download and playable on smartphones at a time when Facebook had just been made publicly accessible, Youtube had just been acquired by Google, and the first iPhone was about to be released later that year.The videos range from 30 seconds to 30 minutes.\u2028\u00a0\u2028Selections from the \u201c365 Day Project\u201d is currently on view at the Internet Pavillion, Venice Italy through November 22. The work \u00a0has previously been presented in its complete form as an installation (playing on 12 or 52 monitors) at ZKM, Karlsruhe (Germany); Hermitage, St. Petersburg (Russia); galerie du jour, Paris (France) and 2B Gallery, Budapest (Hungary).\u2028\u2028<\/span>

\nJonas Mekas was born in 1922 in Semeni\u0161kiai, Lithuania and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Mekas was brought to the US\u00a0along with his brother Adolfas in\u00a01949 by\u00a0the UN Refugee Organization.\u00a0Within weeks, Mekas borrowed money to buy his first Bolex camera and began to record brief moments of his life. Mekas is now among the most influential makers of avant-garde film and a master of the diaristic form. His\u00a0works are shown regularly in the US and internationally including recent solo exhibitions at KZM Karlsruhe, Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Stadmuseum Weisbaden in Germany; Serpentine Gallery, London, UK; Centre Pompidou, Paris; James Fuentes Gallery, NY; DOX Centre for Contemporary Art, Prague;\u00a0MUAC, Mexico City; Krinzinger Projekte Vienna; National Museum of Art, Washington, DC. Mekas\u2019 works have also previously exhibited at\u00a0Moderna Museet, Stockholm; MoMA PS1, Queens; Documenta, Kassel, Galerie Du Jour, Paris; Venice Biennale, Venice; among many others. Mekas has also published more than 20 books of prose and poetry, which have been translated into over 12 languages.\u00a0He was co-founder of the influential\u00a0Film Culture\u00a0magazine and wrote his\u00a0\u00a0\u201cMovie Journal\u201d column at the\u00a0Village Voice\u00a0for 20 years.\u00a0He also founded the Film-Makers\u2019 Cooperative in 1962, and in 1964 the Film-Makers\u2019 Cinematheque, which eventually grew into Anthology Film Archives. Both are still operating under the original mission\u00a0today.<\/span><\/p>\n
